MEDITATION VIEWED FROM THE ISLAMIC RELIGION

The Prophet Muhammad SAW was alone for several days in Hira Cave before receiving the first revelation from Allah.

Allah says in the Qur'an:

الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَتَطْمَىِٕنُّ قُلُوْبُهُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ ۗ اَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ تَطْمَىِٕنُّ الْقُلُوْبُ ۗ

“(Namely) those who believe and their hearts become peaceful by remembering Allah. Remember, only by remembering Allah can the heart be at peace," (Surah ar-Ra'd verse 28).

Meditation in Islam is tafakkur, namely reflection on the wonders of the universe which leads to the appreciation of worshiping Allah. Proper Islamic meditation is in accordance with the principles and practices of the teachings of the Koran and the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW.

Meditation is a widely used term and encompasses a variety of techniques and practices. Meditation or yoga practices that have polytheistic elements are not permitted for a Muslim.

Meditation, which is supported by Islamic sharia, is tafakkur and dhikr which can bring solace, calm and tranquility to the soul.
